Wrapping up 2012 in Pre-K

The past two weeks have been super duper busy!   We have been doing a "secret" project just for Mom and Dad.   It kept us quite busy!   I know that the parents are going to enjoy the beautiful calendar that showcases the child's hand print for each month!   We also have been continuing with our curriculum and learning about all different kinds of emotions.   We are getting really good with recognizing the different emotions that we can feel each day.   The children are doing an incredible job at naming letters and sounds.    Ask your child to tell you about "tricky" letters.    Each morning, I flash letter cards really fast and try to "trick" the children.   They love this game.   They request to play it every day!    This week, I introduced the children to patterns.   We all sat together on the carpet and made patterns with our shapes.   Some children made simple patterns with colors and other children surprised me and made patterns with shapes.   I love to see how the children learn from each other.   Everyday is a blast in Pre-K!

We had a great time at our Christmas Party!  We love The Polar Express!
I love when the children say, "Mrs. Weathers, can you take our picture?" Well, of course, I can!!    I think Abbie is playing peek a boo with me,
We celebrated Layna's birthday!  She is 4!   What a big girl!
The children loved opening presents!
R.J. is decorating his sugar cookie with yummy sprinkles!
I had to take a picture of our finished product!  Whew!  That was a a lot of hard work!  I am very excited about how the calendars turned out.   I know that the parents are going to enjoy them!
I couldn't resist taking a picture of Abbie.   She LOVES icing!
Luc loved decorating his cookie with mini marshmallows.   Yum!                                                                                                           This will be our last blog update until we start back in January.   I have some exciting things planned for next semester.     The students will be introduced to learning stations.    I will be incorporating many Montesorri activities in each learning station.    The stations will be placed in one of the following groups: literacy, math, fine motor, self care tasks, technology, sensory, and creative play.    I am looking forward to a wonderful new year!

Week of December 3-7, 2012

A big welcome to our two new friends, John and Noah! We are so very excited that you are joining our little classroom family.

This week was filled with fun activities that revolved around our letter of the week... S! The boys and girls are doing a fabulous job naming the letters and their sounds. Wow! We have come so far since October! Just think where we will be by May! It makes me so excited.

We also read the big book, "All About Me." We talked each morning about how we are all unique and special. We talked about how we are alike and different. Teaching this age warms my heart because these children have a very hard time finding differences among them. They embrace each other and love each other without boundaries. We can learn so much from young children.

In Math, we are continuing to count 1-20. We are also working on subitizing. This is an important skill that will help them as they progress to more difficult concepts. We have also focused this week on shapes and locating them in our classroom. You wouldn't believe all the shapes we found in our room! They are everywhere!

We also focused on ordering from least to greatest. We made a Christmas tree and we applied this skill! It was a little difficult at first, but before long they all got the hang of it. Way to go class!!

Ask your child to sing some of our new songs. I have gotten my hands on about 10 Dr. Jean CD's and we are LOVING them! I LOVE Dr. Jean. We are learning so much while we sing and dance!

Letter D Week

We had a very busy week!

We focused on the letter D this week.    The children enjoyed lots of activities that focused on our special letter.   We took q-tips and covered the letter D with D-D-D- DOTS!   It was lots of fun.   We all chanted, "Duh-Duh Dots!" as we dipped our q-tips!  We hung our work on our classroom door.    We also made a dinosaur out of the letter D!   The children LOVE anything that has to do with a dinosaur!   We also found that our dinosaurs were covered in shapes!  How cool is that?  We hung our dinosaurs out in the hall for everyone to enjoy.

During circle time, we are always doing new activities.    This week, we played a really fun game with dice and connecting cubes.     I would roll the "magical" dice and the children would count the number shown.  Then, they would show me that amount with their cubes.   The cubes are great for counting, color recognition, sorting, fine motor skills, and patterns!

The next few weeks will be super busy.   We will focus on the letter S next week, then we will use a full week to review all the letters we have studied so far (A, B, C, D, T, D, S).   The week before Christmas holidays, we will doing assessments to see how much the children are learning!  December is going to be very, very busy.

Enjoy the pictures.
